It felt slightly traumatizing to have to leave most of my luggage behind again this morning when V. and I left for Cuzco. I hope it will still be there when I come back next monday. This time the journey was as smooth as can be with only two interruptions, one when we paused to re-visit the worlds smelliest crouchy-loo and one when V. made us all jump out of the car when she felt she had to vomit in one of the hairpin bends with a 600m drop to one side.
We only passed one current landslide and that was in the process to be cleared away by a formidable vehicle.
Even though W. is only some 200km away from Cuzco there are worlds between the two locations - the uplands in between are not only headache-inducing because they are much higher than both, they are also extremely dry. They are nevertheless much more populated than the cloud forest and behind every corner of the road there is another action going on that one doesn't really understand but that often involves pigs, sheep, children or adobe bricks. Many of the extremely steep slopes get cultivated. It must be such an enourmous effort to plant anything on these mountains.
